Bacteriostatic Water for Injection is sterile water containing 0.9% benzyl alcohol as an antimicrobial preservative. It's the standard diluent for reconstituting lyophilized peptide powders, allowing multiple withdrawals from a single vial across a research protocol without compromising sterility between uses.
Mechanism of Action
The 0.9% benzyl alcohol content inhibits bacterial growth between withdrawals, which is what distinguishes bacteriostatic water from standard sterile water for injection — a single-use-only diluent. This makes bacteriostatic water the preferred reconstitution solvent when a lyophilized peptide vial will be accessed more than once over the course of a research protocol.
